Google to digitize US National Archives video

On the Google blog today there is an annoucement that Google will be implementing a pilot project to digitize US National Archives' video footage, to be included in Google Video.

Back in October I mentioned a survey that the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) performed on digital preservation policies. The February 15 RLG DigiNews has an article on this report.

Newspapers of the World Online: U.S. and International Perspectives

The International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), in conjunction with the U.S. Library of Congress, the Library and Archives Canada, and the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah are holding this conference May 17-18 at the University of Utah Campus, Salt Lake City.

Mind the Gap: assessing digital preservation needs in the UK

The Digital Preservation Coalition has released a report of the results of a survey showing "less than 20% of UK organisations surveyed have a strategy in place to deal with the risk of loss or degradation to their digital resources". The survey covered insitutions from a wide range of sectors, not just libraries and archives.

International Conference on the Digitisation of Cultural Heritage

An Expedition to European Digital Cultural Heritage: Collecting, Connecting - and Conserving? will be held 21 - 22 June 2006, in Salzburg, Austria. From the conference website:

It aims at contributing to the implementation of the Dynamic Action Plan for the EU co-ordination of digitisation activities, and at fostering discussion on the i2010 initiative for a European Digital Library.

US Copyright Office publishes report on orphan works

The Report on Orphan Works is now available. It recommends ammending the US Copyright Act’s remedies section with the clauses

(1) prior to the commencement of the infringement, performed a good faith, reasonably diligent search to locate the owner of the infringed copyright and the infringer did not locate that owner, and
(2) throughout the course of the infringement, provided attribution to the author and copyright owner of the work, if possible and as appropriate under the circumstances
