Survey on Longevity of Optical Media

As reported on the DIGITAL-PRESERVATION@JISCMAIL.AC.UK email list, the DVD Association is doing a survey to determine consumers' opionions on the number of years "considered necessary, ideal, or required, for the longevity of storage media". The survey closes May 31/05.

METRO Digitization Expo

As reported on the imagelib email list, the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO) is hosting the METRO Digitization Expo on May 9, 2005. Hardware, software, and service vendors will be there as will people in the field who have managed digitization projects.

The DELOS Summer School 2005 is to be held in Sophia Antipolis, France 5-11 June. This year's focus is on digital preservation.

Second DjVu Summit Conference and Panel Discussion

As reported on the oss4lib mailing list, the Scholarly Communication Center, Alexander Library, Rutgers University is hosting this conference on May 16, 2005.

New articles on Text Encoding Initiative

As reported on David Bigwood's catalogablog, the Text Encoding Initiative has released a collection of articles titled Electronic Textual Editing. Many of these articles are case studies but the collection also includes a section on practices and procedures.

Google Print results starting to appear

As pointed out in this Slashdot posting, the results of Google's Print initiative are starting to appear in search results. Try searching for "book moll flanders" to see it in action.

However, even the scanned versions of works clearly in the public domain have "Copyrighted Material" printed down the right edge of pages... what the?

Workshop: Digital Preservation Management

Cornell University Library is hosting Digital Preservation Management: Short-Term Solutions to Long-Term Problems, May 15-20, 2004 in, Ithaca, NY. The workshop is intended for "managers at organizations that are facing the digital preservation challenge and highlights the need for the integration of organizational and technological issues to devise an appropriate approach".

This collection of newspapers includes a variety of issues from the Columbia Missourian, the Hannibal Courier, and the Liberty Weekly
Tribune, from 1929 and 1966-75.

New tool for viewing mpeg file headers

mpeg2info is a command-line tool for inspecting the headers of MPEG2 files.
